How to become a Christian
Why should I be a ‘Christian’?
Everyone is guilty of sin. We all do wrong things, think wrong things, and say wrong things. Because of the error of mankind, we were all condemned to an eternity away from God. But, ‘God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him may not be lost, but have eternal life’. John 3:16
You should become a Christian so that you will have eternal life.
What does it mean to be saved?
To be preserved, delivered and protected from the evil one, sin and eternal death.
The bible says in John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears what I say and believes in the One who sent me has eternal life. That person will not be judged guilty but has already left death and entered life.” (New Century Version). When we believe in Jesus Christ He saves us from judgement and allows us to live forever with Him in eternity.
How do I become a Christian?
The bible says in Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved.” (New Century Version)
The bible says in the book of Acts 4:12 “there is no other name under heaven and earth whereby men shall be saved but by the name of Jesus.” (New Century Version). This means that you can only be saved through Jesus Christ not by any other thing you do, your good behavior, your money, or another religion. Only through Jesus Christ.
Why is it important to pray?
Prayer is our way to talk to God. When we first become a Christian we say a prayer asking for forgiveness and acceptance as one of His children. You can say this prayer aloud as a confession of your faith in Jesus:
Dear LORD Jesus, I believe that you are the son of God and that you rose again. I know that I am a sinner and I want to be made new. I accept Jesus Christ as my LORD and Saviour. Amen.
Jesus taught the disciples to pray the prayer below.
Matthew 6:9-13 … Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
